Battle Options: Take the Gold or the WWE Troops?

Mid attack prompts now ask you to pick gold or reinforcements at set destruction marks. Here's the rule that gets you the right answer every time.

A heap of gold coins on one side and a group of village troops on the other, split by a beam of light

Quick answer

> Quick answer: Take the gold when you already know you're getting the star. Take the reinforcements when you don't. The prompt fires at fixed destruction marks, so by the time it appears you can usually tell which attack you're in.

This is new for the September season and it's the most interesting thing in it. Attacks now interrupt themselves to ask you a question.

I read the season notes before writing this, because a mid attack choice is easy to describe and hard to get right under a timer. The mechanic is simple. The decision is not. Supercell keeps the live details on the official Clash of Clans page.

How the prompt works

During an attack you hit destruction thresholds, and the game stops to offer you a choice.

The marks are set at a third, two thirds, and full destruction. So it's not random and you can plan for it.

One option gives you extra gold. The other gives you reinforcements from the season's temporary troop pool.

That's the whole mechanic. What makes it hard is that the prompt arrives while your clock is running and your army is halfway through a base, which is the worst possible moment to think carefully.

Why the timing matters more than the reward

The first prompt lands at a third destruction. That's early.

At a third, most attacks are still ambiguous. Your funnel worked or it didn't, but the core is untouched and you can't be sure yet.

The second prompt at two thirds is the honest one. By then you know. Either your heroes are alive and walking into the core, or they're dead and you're praying.

The third fires at the finish, which means it's a reward rather than a decision. Take whatever you like there.

The rule I would use

Here's the rule, and it fits in one line. Ask whether the attack still has doubt in it.

No doubt means take the gold. The star is coming and reinforcements would just walk in behind a won fight.

Doubt means take the troops. A stalling attack with a fresh unit at two thirds can still find the third star, and no amount of gold turns a two star into a three star.

That's it. Doubt buys troops. Certainty buys gold.

When gold is genuinely the better pick

Farming is the obvious case. If you're grinding loot and the base is soft, take gold every time.

Gold also wins when your remaining army can clearly finish. Reinforcements you never deploy are worth nothing at all, and troops that arrive after the fight is decided are exactly that.

And gold wins when you're saving for something specific. Walls, a defense, a hero level. A concrete target makes loot worth more than a maybe.

Earlier this month the gold option also fed the clan side of the season, which made it stronger during those few days.

When the troops are worth more

War attacks are where reinforcements shine. In war, the third star is the entire point and loot is irrelevant.

They're also worth it in any attack where your heroes died early. A fresh unit at two thirds is a second chance at a funnel you botched.

And they're worth it while you're learning the season troops, because a free one is the cheapest practice available.

Our guide to the Yeti Undertaker and how to deploy it covers the one you're most likely to be handed.

What the reinforcements actually are

They come from the season pool, which is four temporary troops for September.

The Undertaker is the opener, with extra lives and wall damage. The Kane variant is a pekka that beelines the town hall after its first death. The Yeta is a thrower variant that spawns support. The giant is filler.

You don't fully control which one you get, so treat the offer as generic help rather than as a specific tool.

That uncertainty is another argument for taking troops when you're already losing. You're not giving up much by not choosing.

Deploying a reinforcement well

A free troop mid attack is easy to waste, and most players waste it.

The common mistake is dropping it wherever the last troop died. That spot is usually a defended pocket that just proved it kills things.

Drop it where it can start again. A fresh flank, a wall segment nobody has touched, or beside a hero that needs one more distraction to survive.

Give it a job rather than giving it revenge. A troop deployed into an existing failure usually joins the failure.

How much gold are we talking about

The gold option is a bonus on top of what you already looted, not a replacement for it.

That matters because it means the choice never costs you your normal raid income. You're comparing a bonus against a bonus.

So neither option is a trap. The worst outcome here is mildly suboptimal, which is unusually forgiving for an event mechanic.

That's worth remembering when the prompt appears and your clock is running. Pick fast and move on. A three second delay costs more than a wrong pick.

The clock cost nobody mentions

The prompt interrupts a live attack. Your timer does not care.

So the real skill here is deciding before the prompt arrives, not while it's on screen.

Before you deploy, look at the base and decide which way you'll answer. Soft base, take gold. Hard base or war, take troops. Then answer instantly when it appears.

I counted the seconds lost on my first few prompts and it was embarrassing. Deciding in advance fixed it completely, and it's the single easiest improvement in this whole mechanic.

Does this change your army composition

A little. Knowing free troops might arrive means you can afford to run slightly thinner on backup.

Don't take that too far. The offer isn't guaranteed to give you what you need, and it only appears if you reach the destruction mark.

A broken attack that never reaches a third destruction gets no prompt at all. The mechanic rewards attacks that were already working.

So build the army you'd build anyway. Treat the prompt as insurance rather than as a slot in your camp.

Using the window to practice

The season is a good excuse to try attacks you'd normally avoid.

Event attacks are low stakes. You're farming loot you wanted anyway, and a failed experiment costs one army.

If you want to practice against a specific layout rather than whatever matchmaking hands you, pull one from our base browser and run it as a friendly challenge in your clan.

That's the fastest way to learn where a mid attack reinforcement actually belongs, because you can repeat the same base until the answer is obvious.

The mistake of answering on autopilot

After a week of prompts, players stop reading them. That's when the mechanic starts costing you.

Autopilot usually means always taking gold, because gold feels safe and troops feel like effort. So the one attack where reinforcements would have saved a war star gets answered wrong out of habit.

The fix is small. Say the answer out loud before you deploy. It sounds silly and it works, because it forces the decision to happen once rather than never.

One deliberate second before the attack beats ten prompts answered without looking.

What to do when the event ends

Battle options are tied to the season window and they leave with it.

What stays is the habit. Deciding your plan before you deploy, rather than mid attack under a timer, is good practice regardless of the event.

So is the underlying question. Does this attack still have doubt in it? That's a useful thing to ask at two thirds destruction even when nobody is offering you anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do the battle option prompts appear?

At fixed destruction marks during an attack, at roughly a third, two thirds and full destruction. They aren't random, so you can decide your answer before you deploy rather than working it out while the timer runs.

Should I take gold or the reinforcements?

Ask whether the attack still has doubt in it. If you already know the star is coming, take gold, because troops arriving after the fight is decided are worth nothing. If the attack is stalling, take troops, since no amount of loot turns a two star into a three star.

Which troops do the reinforcements give me?

They come from the season pool of four temporary troops, and you don't fully control which one arrives. Treat the offer as generic help rather than as a specific tool, which is another reason to take it when you're already behind.

Does taking gold reduce my normal raid loot?

No. The gold option is a bonus on top of what you already looted, so the choice is between two bonuses. Neither answer is a trap, which means picking fast matters more than picking perfectly.

Where should I deploy a mid attack reinforcement?

Somewhere fresh, not where your last troop died. That spot just proved it kills things. Drop it on an untouched flank or beside a hero that needs one more distraction to survive. Our super troops guide applies the same deployment logic to boosted units.
