How to Choose the Right Base Layout

Choosing a base isn't just about picking whatever looks cool. The "right" base depends entirely on what you're trying to accomplish. Are you trying to push trophies? Protect resources while you sleep? Hold your war weight? Each goal calls for a different type of layout — and using the wrong one for your situation is one of the most common mistakes I see newer players make.

Start by asking yourself one question: what am I trying to defend right now? If you're actively raiding and don't care about getting attacked, a farming base makes sense. If war is coming up, you need a war base. If you're pushing for a higher league, trophy bases are what you want. It sounds obvious but a lot of players just pick "whatever looks hard to attack" without thinking about goal alignment.

Once you know your goal, filter by TH level first — using a TH15 base on a TH14 account won't work because you'll be missing buildings. Then narrow by base type. From there, look at the defense replay if one's available. A base that's held two-star in multiple replays is almost always better than one with no replay data at all. That's why we specifically tag bases with defense replay footage — it's the most reliable indicator of real performance.

One thing worth noting: meta changes fast in COC. A base that was crushing in early 2025 might be getting demolished now because of new troops or equipment updates. Check when the base was last verified and look for recently added layouts when Supercell drops major updates. We tag new additions and try to remove bases that are consistently getting three-starred post-update.

Understanding Base Types: War, CWL, Farm, Trophy, Progress

These five base types cover most situations in Clash of Clans. Here's what each one actually means and when you should use it:

War Base

War bases are designed to be hard to three-star. The goal isn't to protect resources — it's to force your opponent to use more attacks or take fewer stars. Good war bases have the Town Hall buried deep, compartmentalized sections that slow down funneling, and anti-two-star setups that make it hard to get the TH and both percent thresholds. You'll see a lot of ring and island designs in this category because of how well they handle common army compositions like Super Witch, Blizzard, and Root Rider spam.

CWL Base

Clan War League bases are slightly different from regular war bases. In CWL you can only be attacked once, so you're optimizing to hold two stars rather than three — giving up the Town Hall early is actually a common strategy. Many CWL bases deliberately expose the TH slightly to waste an attacker's heroes chasing it while they can't get the core. This is a more specialized design philosophy and it's why CWL bases are a separate category.

Farm Base

Farm bases prioritize protecting your Gold, Elixir, and Dark Elixir storages — not the Town Hall. They're for players who are actively farming resources and don't care much about trophies. You'll notice farm bases often have the TH near the edge (so attackers can grab it for shield) while keeping storages deep in the core. If you're grinding resources for upgrades, this is what you want.

Trophy Base

Trophy bases are designed to minimize the attacker's star count overall — they're trying to keep you in a higher league for longer. The Town Hall is usually well-protected since losing it costs you a star. These bases tend to be tighter, with defenses spread to maximize coverage, and they work best in leagues where attackers don't all use the strongest three-star armies.

Progress Base

Progress bases are for active upgraders — players with Builders busy all the time and defenses that are scattered across upgrade levels. They're designed to work well even when key defenses are down. If you're at a TH you just rushed to or if you're mid-upgrade on Eagle Artillery or Inferno Towers, a progress base accounts for those gaps in a way that a standard war base wouldn't.

Base Layout Styles: Ring, Box, Island, Toxic, Diamond

Beyond base types, there's a whole vocabulary for describing how a base is physically structured. Understanding these styles helps you pick layouts that counter the armies your enemies typically use.

Ring / Donut

The core is hollow — buildings form a ring around a central area. Strong against ground attacks that funnel toward the center. Weak against air attacks that can spread across the ring from multiple angles. Very popular in CWL.

Box / Compact

Everything packed tightly together in a square or rectangle. Defenses support each other well but a good funnel breaks the whole thing open. Easier to build but also easier to read. Better for lower TH levels where attack options are limited.

Island

A central fortified "island" surrounded by walls and outer buildings that act as a buffer. One of the hardest styles to funnel into. Common in high-end war bases at TH14+ where the Eagle and Scattershot sit protected in the core island.

Toxic / Anti-2-Star

Specifically designed to hold two-star attacks. Buildings are spread to make 50% destruction difficult. Often sacrifices one-star protection in exchange. Used in war when your team is confident attackers won't three-star but might get two.

Diamond

Buildings arranged in a diamond pattern with the TH at center. Good 360-degree coverage, harder to funnel from any single direction. Works well as a trophy base because it doesn't have obvious weak points attackers can exploit without a high-level army. You'll see a lot of diamond variants in our TH12-TH14 trophy base section.

How to Copy a COC Base to Your Game

Every base in our library has a copy link — here's exactly how to use it:

  1. 1

    Find a base you want

Use the filters above to narrow by TH level and base type. Click on any base card to see the full details, defense replays, and copy link.

  2. 2

    Tap "Copy Base Link"

This copies a special Clash of Clans base link to your clipboard. The link is in the format https://link.clashofclans.com/... — it's Supercell's official deep-link format for sharing bases.

  3. 3

Open Clash of Clans on your phone

Switch to your COC app. If you copied the link on your phone, the game should prompt you automatically. On some Android devices you'll see a notification saying "Open in Clash of Clans."

  4. 4

    Import and place the layout

The game opens your base editor with the imported layout pre-loaded. You can adjust individual building positions from here before saving. This is a good step if your base has buildings that don't perfectly match the template (e.g., different levels).

  5. 5

    Save and set as active

Hit save in the base editor and set the layout as your current active arrangement. Don't forget to switch it to your war layout if you imported it for CWL — bases don't automatically apply to war unless you set the war layout specifically.

If a base link isn't working, it's usually because the link has expired or the base was submitted before a major game update changed building counts. We try to refresh these regularly but if you spot a broken link, use the report button on the base card and we'll fix it.

When to Change Your Base Layout

This is something a lot of players don't think about enough. Most people pick a base, forget it exists, and then wonder why they keep getting three-starred. Here's when you should actually swap:

  • After a major game update — new troops, new equipment, or new defenses change what attacks work. A base that held well pre-update might be wide open afterward. This is probably the most important time to check.
  • When you hit a new Town Hall — don't carry over your old base. The building count changes, and a mismatched base has buildings missing from the design, which creates obvious weak points.
  • When you're getting consistently three-starred by the same attack — if three different players all Super Witch their way through your base in one week, it's not bad luck. The base has a problem with that specific attack style and you need to find one that counters it.
  • Before Clan War League season — CWL is the highest-stakes war mode. Don't go in with a farming base you forgot to swap. Check our CWL base section before the season starts.
  • When a base becomes "famous" — if a base gets popular enough that it shows up in YouTube videos, top attackers will have it memorized. Swap it out. Predictability is a weakness in COC.

Changing your base once a month isn't overcorrecting — it's reasonable. The meta shifts faster than most players track it. We also have the AI base finder if you spot a base that's been doing well against you in war and want to understand how people attack it.

Browse FAQ

Common questions about finding and using base layouts.

How many bases are in the library?

Over 1,200 as of 2026. We add new bases regularly — especially after Supercell updates. The count on the Browse page header reflects the current total. We don't keep outdated bases just to inflate the number; old bases that consistently fail in replays get removed.

Are these bases tested or just randomly collected?

A mix of both, with quality filtering. Community submissions go through an initial review — we don't publish every submission. Featured and trending bases are specifically ones that have defense replay evidence or strong community ratings. The AI base finder on our homepage also surfaces these bases when they match against attack patterns, which is another signal of their effectiveness.

Can I submit my own base layout?

Yes. We accept community submissions through the contact page. Include your base copy link, TH level, base type, and ideally a defense replay link showing it in action. Submissions with replay evidence get prioritized. We don't pay for submissions but if your base makes it into the featured section, you'll get credit.

Do base links expire?

Clash of Clans base links don't have a fixed expiration date set by us, but Supercell's servers do occasionally expire old links. If you find an expired link, hit the report button and we'll try to find an updated version. For very popular bases, we often have multiple link sources.

What's the difference between browsing here and using the AI base finder?

Browsing is for when you know what you want — you're at TH15 and need a war base, so you filter and scroll. The AI base finder is for when you're looking at a specific base (an enemy's war base, something you saw in a YouTube video) and want to find it, copy it, or find three-star strategies against it. They're complementary tools. Most players use browsing for defense setup and the AI finder for attack planning.

Is there a mobile app for browsing bases?

Yes — the Base Drop Android app has the full browse library with offline saves so you can access bases without WiFi. It also has push notifications when new bases matching your TH level are added. The website you're on now works great on mobile too, but the app has a few extra features. You can find it on Google Play by searching "Base Drop COC."
