Rush to Town Hall 18 or Max Town Hall 17

Rushing hurts you in war but waiting for a full max wastes months. Here's the middle path most players should actually take.

A Town Hall upgrade decision shown between two base layouts

Quick answer

> Quick answer: Don't fully max Town Hall 17 before moving up, and don't rush blindly either. Take your offence with you. Push the Town Hall for cheaper upgrades and new content, but never leave heroes, troops and army camps behind, because those are what actually win attacks.

The reason pure rushing hurts is war matchmaking. It weighs your offence and defence together, so a rushed base makes your clan heavier without making you stronger. You become an easy three star, and your own attacks still have to face fully grown Inferno Towers and Scattershots.

Why rushing punishes you specifically in war

I read through two current guides on this before writing, because the answer has genuinely shifted over the years and old advice is still floating around.

Here's the mechanic that matters. Clan war matchmaking looks at offence and defence together when it works out where your base sits. Upgrade your Town Hall and leave everything else behind, and your weight goes up anyway.

So you get the worst of both. Your defences are still baby versions of what your new opponents bring, which makes you a free three star for them. Meanwhile your own heroes and troops are underlevelled, and the enemy's Inferno Towers and Scattershots do not care that your Barbarian King is behind.

That's the whole trap. You paid the price of moving up without buying any of the benefit.

It's also why a rushed account feels fine in normal multiplayer and miserable in war. In multiplayer you skip until a base looks easy. In war you get two attacks in a regular war, one in CWL, and the enemy roster is whatever your clan was matched against.

If war performance is what you care about, our Town Hall 18 attack strategy guide covers what actually works up there once your offence is ready for it.

Why waiting for a full max is also wrong

The opposite extreme costs you too, just more quietly.

Sitting at Town Hall 17 until every wall, every trap and every building is finished can take many months. During all of that time you're earning the same loot, running the same attacks, and getting none of the new content.

Moving up doesn't make your existing upgrades cheaper. Nothing gets discounted. What it does is open new levels of buildings, troops and equipment, and give you access to the loot those levels sit behind.

The current thinking has landed on a middle position, usually called strategic rushing. Move the Town Hall, but move your offence with it.

Both guides I read make the same core point. The offensive gains from advancing generally outweigh the defensive comfort of staying put, as long as you don't let your attacking side rot while you do it.

There's a second cost to waiting that people underrate. Your clan moves on without you. If your clan mates are progressing and you're grinding out the last few walls, war matchmaking starts placing you differently within the roster, and you spend a season attacking bases built for a level you already outgrew in skill.

Walls are the clearest example of the trap. They soak up enormous amounts of loot and give the smallest visible return, yet a full max demands every single one. It's the classic way an account stalls, with the rest of the base ready to move long before the walls are done.

So treat a full max as a goal you drift toward, not a gate you must clear.

What strategic rushing actually looks like

The rule is simple to say and easy to get wrong. Offence travels with you. Defence can lag.

In practice that means heroes first. They are the slowest thing on your account and the biggest single factor in whether an attack works, so they should never be the thing you park.

Army camps come next, because army size decides what compositions you can even bring. Then your laboratory, so troops keep pace with the bases you're now facing.

Defences are where you're allowed to be behind. They'll catch up. A weak defence loses you a star in war. A weak offence loses you every attack you make, in war and out of it.

There's a practical ordering question underneath all of this, and it's the same one at every Town Hall. Our Town Hall 16 upgrade priority guide walks the same logic one level down, and the sequence carries upward almost unchanged.

One more thing worth saying plainly. Strategic rushing is not permission to skip hero upgrades because they're boring. That's just rushing with a nicer name.

There's a timing trick that makes the whole thing easier. Heroes keep working while a building upgrade runs, but they're unavailable while they're upgrading themselves. So the sensible pattern is to start a long hero upgrade at the moment you least need that hero, which usually means right after your war attacks are done rather than the night before war day.

Same logic applies to your laboratory. It runs independently of your builders, so leaving it idle is pure waste. A lab sitting empty while five builders are busy is one of the most common quiet mistakes on a rushed account.

How to tell if you already rushed too hard

You don't need a calculator for this. A few signs give it away.

Your war attacks stall around half the base. Not a bad attack here and there, but consistently running out of army before the core.

Your clan mates at the same Town Hall clear bases you can't touch. That gap is usually heroes and lab rather than skill.

You get matched against bases in war whose defences look a full tier above yours.

And the loot one. If you're at a high Town Hall but still farming the same targets you did two levels ago, that's a sign your offence can't reach the bases that hold the resources you now need. Upgrade costs scale up with your Town Hall. Your earning power has to scale with it, and earning power is an offence problem.

If that's you, the fix isn't another Town Hall. It's a pause. Stop upgrading the Town Hall entirely and put everything into heroes and lab until your attacks land again.

That pause feels like going backwards. It isn't. You're buying back the ability to actually use the level you already paid for.

Equipment is part of this too now, and it changes attacks more than raw hero level does at the top end. Our Town Hall 18 hero equipment guide covers what to put ore into first.

What I would do this week

If you're at Town Hall 17 with heroes close to their cap and your lab mostly current, move up. You're the case the middle path is built for.

If your heroes are several levels behind and your lab has a long queue, finish those first. The Town Hall will still be there.

And if you're already up at 18 and struggling, stop buying defence upgrades for a while. Heroes, camps, lab. In that order, until war stops feeling unfair.

The honest summary of both sources I read is that neither extreme wins. Pure rushing hands your clan a liability. Pure maxing hands you months of nothing. Keep your offence current, let your defence trail, and you get most of the upside of both without the cost of either.

For a broader look at how upgrade order works across every level, including the crafted defences that now start much earlier, our crafted defense upgrade priority guide covers the full picture. The community discussion on the tradeoff is laid out well in this rushing versus maxing breakdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is rushing to Town Hall 18 a bad idea?

Pure rushing is, because war matchmaking weighs offence and defence together. Your weight rises without your strength rising, so you become an easy three star while still facing fully grown defences on your own attacks.

Should I max Town Hall 17 completely first?

No. A full max can take many months during which you gain no new content and no cheaper progress. The current consensus favours moving up while keeping your offence current rather than waiting for every wall to finish.

What should I upgrade before moving to Town Hall 18?

Heroes first, then army camps, then your laboratory. Those decide whether your attacks work. Defences are the part you are allowed to leave behind for a while.

What is strategic rushing in Clash of Clans?

It means advancing your Town Hall for the cheaper costs and new content while refusing to let heroes, troops and camps fall behind. Our Town Hall 18 attack strategy guide covers what your offence needs to handle once you get there.

How do I fix an account I already rushed?

Stop upgrading the Town Hall entirely. Put everything into heroes and the laboratory until your war attacks start landing again. It feels like going backwards, but it buys back the level you already paid for.
