Can You Get Star Bonus Without Playing Ranked
Yes, ordinary multiplayer attacks complete the star bonus too. But ranked quietly decides how big that bonus is, and most players miss why.

Quick answer
> Quick answer: Yes. Five stars in ordinary multiplayer battles completes your star bonus exactly like ranked does. You do not have to touch ranked to collect it.
What ranked controls is the size. The payout is set by your town hall level and your league, and your league only moves when you play ranked.
So skipping ranked doesn't cost you the bonus. It freezes the bonus at whatever league you last sat in, which for most players is a lot smaller than it could be.
Where the confusion comes from
I read the star bonus rules line by line because I'd seen the opposite claim stated confidently in two different places this month.
The rule is short. Achieve five stars in multiplayer battles or ranked battles, and you get the bonus. Both modes count. It's been that way since the feature arrived back in January 2016.
The reason people believe ranked is required is that the ladder moved. Since ranked became the way leagues work, players who ignore ranked stop climbing, their league stops improving, and their bonus stops growing.
From the inside that feels identical to being locked out. It isn't. You're collecting the same bonus, just a smaller version of it, forever.
That distinction matters because the fix is different. If you were locked out, you'd have to start playing ranked daily. You don't. You need one good push, then you can go back to farming.
What the bonus actually pays you
Three things arrive when you complete it, and one of them gets missed constantly.
Gold and elixir land in your Treasury, not straight into your storages. If your treasury is already full, that's capacity you're wasting every day.
From Town Hall 8 upward, if you've built the Blacksmith, ore arrives alongside it and goes into the Blacksmith rather than the treasury.
Here's the part worth writing down. The ore in a star bonus is largely independent of your Town Hall level. It follows your league instead.
So a Town Hall 12 account sitting in Titan earns roughly the same ore per day as a Town Hall 17 account in Titan. That's unusual in this game and it's very good news for a mid game player. Our ore farming guide breaks the league by league numbers down properly.
Players below Town Hall 7, who can't join leagues at all, still get a star bonus. Theirs is set purely by Town Hall level.
The stacking rule nobody uses
This is the most practical thing on the page and it's buried in the mechanics.
The bonus resets 24 hours after you earn the fifth star. Not 24 hours after you collect it. After the fifth star.
You can hold two star bonuses at once. That's the cap.
And if you have two available and you complete the first, any extra stars you already earned count toward the second one. So a single good session can clear both.
That means a player who can only log in every other day isn't losing half their bonuses. They're losing none, as long as they never let a third build up.
I counted this against how most people actually play, and it fits the weekend player perfectly. Two sessions a week, both bonuses cleared each time, nothing wasted.
The attack button tells you where you stand. Star outlines mean a bonus is waiting, and they fill in as you score.
The treasury detail that quietly eats your loot
Star bonus gold and elixir do not land in your storages. They land in the Treasury, and the Treasury has a cap.
That cap is set by your Town Hall level and your Clan Castle level, and it fills from war loot and clan games as well as star bonuses.
So the failure mode is silent. You complete the bonus, the treasury is already full, and the reward has nowhere to go.
Nothing warns you in a way that's hard to miss. The number just doesn't move.
The habit that fixes it takes two seconds. Collect from the treasury before you attack, not after. That way there's always room when the bonus lands.
It matters most for players who war regularly, because war loot and star bonus loot compete for the same space. A busy war week is exactly when you're most likely to be wasting both.
So how much is ranked really worth to you
Work it out for your own account rather than taking a rule of thumb.
The gap between the bottom leagues and Legend is roughly three and a half times the shiny ore per day, and it's the difference between zero starry ore and two.
That's per day, every day, for as long as you sit there. Over a season it dwarfs anything you'd get from a single event.
But it's a one time cost to move, not a daily one. Push once, settle in a higher league, and the bonus stays bigger while you go back to farming dead bases.
The trap is trophy dropping. Players drop to farm easy loot and quietly cut their own daily ore in half without noticing, because the loot they gained is visible and the ore they lost is not.
If you farm low on purpose, at least know what it costs. That's a real strategy, not a mistake. It's just an expensive one now that ore exists.
What happens if your league changes mid cycle
This trips up anyone who pushes trophies in bursts.
The bonus is calculated against your league at the moment it pays out, not the league you were in when you started earning stars.
So pushing up and then collecting is worth more than collecting and then pushing. Same attacks, different order, bigger payout.
The reverse is the painful one. Drop a league on the defence overnight, collect in the morning, and you're paid at the lower rate for stars you earned at the higher one.
I'd hold a completed bonus until after a push rather than collect it on the way up. You can stack two, so there's room to wait.
It's a small edge and it costs nothing. Those are the ones worth building a habit around, because they compound every single day you play.
What Supercell has said about changing this
The team has acknowledged the tension. Ranked was meant to be optional, and tying the star bonus to league made it less optional than intended.
They said they're working on something that would let you improve the star bonus through battle mode as well. That's from an interview series, not a patch note, so hold it loosely.
For scale on how much ranked gets played, over 4.5 billion ranked battles have been fought since the mode arrived. It's not a side feature.
If that change ships, the calculation in this post changes completely, and battle mode becomes a real alternative rather than a way to hold position.
Watch Supercell's blog for it. Until then, league is the only lever on bonus size.
What to do this week
Collect both bonuses whenever two are stacked. That's free and most players leave one sitting.
Empty your treasury before you collect, or the gold and elixir go nowhere.
Check which league you're in. If you dropped for farming and you're below Archer 8, you've turned starry ore off entirely, and that's the currency gating your hero equipment.
Push once, then stop. You don't need to grind ranked daily to keep the bigger bonus, you just need to have arrived.
And build war bases that hold trophies rather than giving them away. The base browser has current layouts, and our Town Hall 17 versus 18 guide covers when upgrading is worth the defensive dip that comes with it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you need ranked battles to get the star bonus?
No. Five stars in ordinary multiplayer battles completes the star bonus just as well as ranked battles do. Both modes have counted since the feature was added in January 2016. Ranked only decides how large the bonus is, through your league.
Where does star bonus loot go?
Gold and elixir are deposited into your Treasury rather than straight into your storages, so empty it first if it's near capacity. From Town Hall 8 with a Blacksmith built, ore arrives too and goes into the Blacksmith instead.
How many star bonuses can you stack?
Two at most. The timer resets 24 hours after you earn the fifth star, not after you collect the reward. If you hold two and clear the first, any extra stars you already scored count toward the second one.
Does town hall level change the ore in a star bonus?
Barely. Ore in the star bonus is largely independent of Town Hall level and follows your league instead. A Town Hall 12 account in the same league as a Town Hall 17 account earns roughly the same ore per day, which is unusually generous to mid game bases.
Is trophy dropping still worth it in 2026?
It's a real trade, not a free win. Dropping gets you easier loot but cuts your daily ore, and below Archer League 8 it removes starry ore completely. Our ranked leagues guide explains how the ladder works before you decide where to sit.
