TH12 Upgrade Priority 2026: The Order That Saves Months
A TH12 upgrade order for 2026: lab, army camps and Clan Castle first, then the Siege Workshop and heroes. Skip the Giga Tesla, it needs no upgrades now.

The Short Version
Quick answer: At Town Hall 12, start the Laboratory first, then the army camps and Clan Castle, then the Siege Workshop and your main hero. Don't spend a builder on the Giga Tesla, because Supercell removed its levels in 2025. Traps and new defenses fill idle builders. Walls get rings whenever you have them.
That's the order. Here's the reasoning.
Town Hall 12 is the first town hall where upgrades start to feel long. It's also the one where old advice goes most wrong, because the Giga Tesla used to be a big upgrade and now isn't one at all.
I read the original Town Hall 12 patch notes and the changes since, so this list reflects the game as it is in late 2026.
The Giga Tesla Needs Nothing Now
This is the change most old guides miss.
The Giga Tesla launched in 2018 with five upgrade levels, each letting it target more enemies. At level 5, the Town Hall turned into a bomb when destroyed.
Then in August 2025, Supercell removed Town Hall weapon levels from Town Hall 12, 13, 14 and 15. I checked Supercell's notice, and it says your weapon is now at max power whatever level it had before.
So at Town Hall 12, the Giga Tesla is already as strong as it gets. There's nothing to upgrade.
The full notice gives the reason. These levels were slowing down midgame progress. For you, it means one fewer long upgrade on the list.
Laboratory First
The lab is one queue, and it's the slowest one you have.
The original Town Hall 12 patch notes brought the Laboratory to level 10, which unlocks the new research levels for this town hall. Until it finishes, your army is stuck at Town Hall 11 strength.
Start it the day you upgrade. Then keep it busy every hour.
Research the troops you actually attack with. Your main war troop comes first, then your main spells, then siege machines once the workshop is up.
The Lab Assistant from the Helper Hut speeds research up, so keep him working too.
A day of idle lab time is gone for good.
Army Camps and Clan Castle
These two are the quiet winners at Town Hall 12.
The patch notes list army camps level 10 with 5 more housing space each, and Clan Castle level 8 with 5 more housing space. That's more troops in every single attack.
Think about what that means. Every army camp you upgrade adds room for more troops in every attack you make afterwards. No defense upgrade touches that many battles.
So do the camps and the Clan Castle early. They're the fastest way to feel stronger at a new town hall.
The spell factories come next if they have levels waiting. Barracks come last, and only when a level unlocks a troop you'll use.
Build the Siege Workshop Early
Town Hall 12 unlocks the Siege Workshop. It's one of the most important buildings at this level.
Siege machines carry your Clan Castle troops into the base. The first two, according to the patch notes, were the Wall Wrecker, which plows through walls, and the Battle Blimp, which flies over defenses and drops bombs on the Town Hall.
Before the workshop, you rely on clanmates to donate siege machines. After it, you can train your own.
That makes your attacks less dependent on who's online. It also lets you research siege levels yourself.
Build it early and pick one siege machine to focus on. Your main army decides which.
Heroes, One at a Time
Heroes carry attacks more than any other unit. That's why they come right after the core offense buildings.
The cost is time. A hero that's upgrading can't fight, so running every hero at once leaves you weak for weeks.
Stagger them. Level the hero you rely on most first, and keep your best war hero available on war days.
The Hero Hall holds every hero in one building now, with slots for attack and defense. The principle hasn't changed. Level the heroes you attack with.
Equipment matters as much as hero levels. Our equipment tier list for every hero shows which pieces to put your ore into first.
New Defenses and Traps
Town Hall 12 adds more buildings to place. The patch notes list one more Giant Bomb, two more Spring Traps, one more Seeking Air Mine, one more Air Bomb and one more Hidden Tesla.
New buildings start at level one. Their early levels cost far less than the late levels of your older defenses, so they're good value.
Traps are cheap and quick. Use them to fill a builder that would otherwise sit idle.
There's one trap detail worth knowing. The same August 2025 notice reworked Spring Traps so each one targets only the troop with the highest housing space nearby. It also added Spring Trap levels starting from Town Hall 11.
Place them where big troops walk, not where small ones swarm.
The Rest of the Defense Order
Once the new buildings are placed, the rest of your defenses follow a simple order.
First, defenses that damage groups. Splash damage and air defense hurt whole armies, not one troop at a time.
Second, defenses in your core. They fight in every attack that reaches the middle.
Third, defenses near the edge. Attackers can often path around them.
Your war log breaks ties. If one defense keeps falling first, it's underleveled or badly placed.
Never leave a builder idle while you save for the perfect upgrade. Start the next best one. A builder working on something useful beats a builder waiting for something ideal.
Walls at Town Hall 12
The patch notes added a new wall level at Town Hall 12, and there are a lot of walls to get through.
The good news is that wall rings got easier this year. Since the August 2026 update, they don't need a free builder. Use a ring on a wall while every builder is busy.
So drop rings the moment you have them. There's no longer a trade off.
For gold and elixir, keep walls as your overflow. When your storages are nearly full and every builder is working, spend the extra on walls.
Don't put walls ahead of offense. A higher wall doesn't win a war attack.
Where Dark Elixir Goes
Dark elixir is the resource you'll run short of first.
At Town Hall 12 there are no pets yet. Those arrive at Town Hall 14. So the choice is simpler: heroes or dark troops.
Heroes win almost every time. They improve every attack you make.
Dark troops come first only if one of them is the heart of your army. If your main attack leans on a dark troop, its research can jump the queue.
Watch your storage. If it keeps filling to the cap, start the next hero upgrade before it tops out.
Focused dark elixir finishes heroes. Spread thin, it finishes nothing.
When to Move to Town Hall 13
Not until your heroes and main army are close to Town Hall 12's limits.
Town Hall 13 raises the caps again. Your heroes arrive at the levels they left with, so any gap you carry up gets wider.
A rushed account meets stronger bases with a weaker army. That's the slowest way to progress, even though it feels like the fastest.
Defenses can lag a little. Offense shouldn't.
When you're ready, our TH13 upgrade priority guide carries the same logic up one level.
A First Month Plan
Here's the first month in four steps.
Week one. Start the Laboratory. Place the new traps and defenses with spare builders.
Week two. Army camps and the Clan Castle.
Week three. Siege Workshop and your main hero.
Week four. Your second hero, then splash and air defenses in your war log's order.
Wall rings go on walls whenever you have them.
While your builders work, fix your layout. Last week we published Town Hall 12 war layouts with copy links, and the base library has more for every town hall.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I upgrade first at Town Hall 12?
Start with the Laboratory, then the army camps and Clan Castle. The lab unlocks new research levels, and the camps and castle add housing space to every attack. After that, build the Siege Workshop and start your main hero.
Do I need to upgrade the Giga Tesla in 2026?
No. Supercell removed Town Hall weapon levels from Town Hall 12 to 15 in August 2025. The Giga Tesla is at max power whatever level it had before, so there's nothing to upgrade. Use that builder elsewhere.
Is the Siege Workshop worth building early at TH12?
Yes. It lets you train your own siege machines instead of waiting for donations. The first two siege machines were the Wall Wrecker and the Battle Blimp. Pick one that suits your main army and research it first.
Should I rush from TH12 to TH13?
No. Town Hall 13 raises the caps, and your heroes arrive at the same levels they left with. Finish heroes and your main army first, then upgrade. Defenses can lag a little, but offense shouldn't.
How do I get equipment ore faster at Town Hall 12?
Ore comes from the star bonus, shops and events, not from builders. Put it into two heroes and their two best pieces instead of spreading it across everything. Our guide on getting more ore lists every source.
