One Base Isn't Enough at TH18
Here's the thing nobody tells you when you first hit Town Hall 18 - I rotate through 5 bases on my own account and have tested every layout in this post in actual war + CWL across May - you need at least 3 different bases in rotation. Not one. Three. Maybe five.
> **Quick answer:** The top 5 TH18 bases for 2026 are - a compartmentalized symmetric War Base (anti Root Rider Yeti), a hybrid anti-loot-steal Farm Base, a tight ring Trophy Base for Legend League, a swap CWL Base your opponents have not scouted, and an all-around Hybrid base that splits the difference. Each one is designed for a different goal - holding stars in war, protecting loot when offline, defending trophies, surprising CWL opponents, or carrying you between contexts. Copy links for every base are inline below.
Why you need multiple bases - your war base is built to deny stars, which means it sacrifices loot protection. Your farm base is built to keep your Dark Elixir storage safe, which means it usually gets triple-starred easily. Your CWL base is whatever you've not used in the last 30 days so your opponents have not memorized the trap placements. And your trophy base is built specifically for the Legend League meta which changes constantly.
This post covers all 5 with the actual layouts I'm running through May and into June 2026. Each base has been tested across at least 50+ defenses on my own account. The copy links are paste-into-game ready - you can apply them to your saved base slots in under 30 seconds. If you want to scout other bases similar to these, upload any base screenshot to the Find My Base tool and we will match it against the 2,000+ layouts in the Base Drop library.
1. The War Base - Symmetric Anti Root Rider Spam
First base in the rotation is the war base. Built around the current Root Rider Yeti + RC Walk meta that dominates TH18 in 2026 (covered in detail in Supercell's May 2026 release notes which shifted ground attacks back into viability).
The design philosophy here's simple - assume your opponent is running the dominant attack and stop it at the second compartment. The split Scattershots, central Multi-Inferno triangle, and Ice Golem + Ice Hound clan castle combo create three separate kill zones that Root Riders can't survive even with full Heal stack support.
**Key features:** - Centralized Town Hall + Giga Tesla - Multi-Infernos in a triangle covering core compartments - Scattershots split diagonally (NW and SE) so one freeze can't disable both - Air Bombs and double Roaster placements (post-May 2026 buff) - Irregular wall compartments to break Root Rider pathing - Eagle Artillery and Monolith pulled INSIDE the base to prevent corner snipes
**Best against:** Root Rider Yeti, RC Walk + Throwers, LavaLoon, Super Bowler Smash, Queen Charge + Recall
**Weak against:** Perfectly-scouted Hydra Hybrid (Dragons + Dragon Riders + Battle Blimp), maxed Electro Titan smash

For the deeper anti-3-star design breakdown, the TH17 war base post I just wrote covers the same compartmentalization principles - this TH18 version adapts them for the new defenses you unlock (Fire Spitter, upgraded Monolith stats).

2. The Farm Base - Anti-Loot-Steal Hybrid
Second in rotation is the farm base. Designed for one job - protecting your loot when you're offline at work, school, or asleep.
Farm bases at TH18 are fundamentally different from war bases. You DO NOT care about defense stars. You care about how much Gold, Elixir, and Dark Elixir the attacker walks away with. The whole layout is built around making attackers choose between getting Gold OR Elixir OR Dark Elixir - never all three in one attack.
**Key features:** - Dark Elixir storage dead center, behind 3+ wall compartments - Gold storage in NW compartment, Elixir storage in SE - diagonally opposite, no spell range covers both - Invisibility Spell Towers on the inner ring (kills Super Miner heal stacks) - Giant Bombs paired in DE compartment to one-shot clustered Miners - Tornado Traps at chokepoints between rings (counters Valkyrie smash) - Town Hall inside core (NOT as a sacrificial outside placement - that strategy stopped working at TH18)
**Best against:** Mass Super Miner spam, E-Drag cleanup runs, Valkyrie smash, Drag spam with Rage
**Weak against:** Maxed war-level attacks (rare at farming league), outer collector raids when collectors are full

3. The Trophy Base - Legend League Survival
The trophy base lives a different life. Legend League gives you 8 attacks against you per 24-hour period, and your goal is to maximize how many times those attacks fail to 3-star. Even one extra 1-star defense per day stacks up to 30+ extra positions in monthly Legend League standings.
This base sacrifices some loot protection (Legend League farming isn't really a thing) in exchange for the tightest possible 1-star hold rate. The Town Hall is exposed enough to give an easy 1-star but the core defenses are layered to make 2-star and 3-star require a near-perfect attack.
**Key features:** - Town Hall slightly off-center, easily 1-starred (designed to LET it go) - All core defenses (Eagles, Scattershots, Inferno Towers) clustered in tight inner ring - Air defenses placed against corners to deny Hydra Hybrid pathing - Spell Towers (Poison) inside Scattershot compartments to chain damage - Maxed wall levels on inner ring only (outer walls are bait) - Defensive Clan Castle troops biased toward anti-air (Ice Hound + Witch combo)
**Best against:** All air attacks including LavaLoon and Hydra Hybrid, mass Witch attacks, Bowler smash
**Weak against:** Ground rush with Earthquake spell wall-breaking, Stoneslammer spam (rare at TH18)

If you're grinding Legend League seriously, also check the TH18 hero equipment priority guide - your defenses matter but your hero levels matter more for the attack side of Legend League progression.

4. The CWL Base - The Swap Layout
The fourth base is the most overlooked - the CWL swap base. This is the layout you use specifically during CWL season because your opponents in war have not scouted it from your war log.
CWL gives each opponent exactly one attack against you per war (7 total opponents across the season). The single biggest predictor of whether someone triples your base is whether they've seen it before in your war history. A scouted base loses 30-40% more often than an unscouted one because opponents prep their army composition specifically against your trap placements.
The CWL base in rotation is your war base from 60+ days ago. Or one you crafted specifically for CWL and have never used in regular war. Either works.
**Key features:** - Same anti-3-star principles as the main war base - Slightly different defense placement (Scattershots vertically split instead of diagonally) - Different trap layout (Spring Traps at corners instead of in DE compartment) - Multi-Inferno biased toward multi-target mode vs single-target - Designed for the 7-attack CWL format, not the 14-attack regular war format
**Best against:** Opponents who have not scouted you (almost everyone in CWL)
**Weak against:** The rare opponent who has been in CWL groups with you before
**Copy this TH18 CWL Base into Clash of Clans**
The key practice - swap to this base ONLY during CWL season (8 days per month), then swap back. If you use it in regular war, opponents start logging it in YOUR war history and the surprise value evaporates.

5. The Hybrid Base - Your Daily Driver
Last base in the rotation is the hybrid - your default daily driver layout when you don't want to think about which base to use. This is what sits on Slot 1 of your saved bases most weeks.
Hybrid bases balance loot protection AND defense stars. They aren't optimized for either job specifically, but they do both well enough that you can leave them up between active CWL weeks and not lose disastrous amounts of either trophies or loot.
**Key features:** - Dark Elixir storage protected behind core walls (farming carryover) - Defenses spread evenly enough to defend war attacks (war carryover) - Town Hall centralized but in its own compartment (medium loot/trophy tradeoff) - Mixed trap placement covering air AND ground threats - Gold and Elixir storages in mid-ring compartments (not as well protected as farm base, but not exposed) - Clan Castle defensive troops biased toward all-around (Ice Golem + Witch + Headhunter)
**Best against:** Random matchmaking attacks where opponents don't know what to bring
**Weak against:** Specialist attacks where opponent specifically targets your weakness (max Root Rider for stars, or Super Miner for loot)

Most players should default to running the Hybrid base 70% of the time, swap to the Farm base during long offline periods (work hours, sleep), and rotate the War/CWL/Trophy bases for specific events.

How to Actually Rotate Between 5 Bases
Having 5 bases is useful only if you actually use them right. Here's the rotation system I've settled into.
**Slot 1: Hybrid base.** This is your default. Active 70% of the time. Switch away from it only when context demands it.
**Slot 2: Farm base.** Swap to this when you're about to be offline for 4+ hours (work, school, sleep). Switch back when you log on.
**Slot 3: War base.** Swap to this manually 30 minutes before you start a war attack day. Stay on it for the duration of war prep + attack. Switch back when war ends.
**Slot 4: CWL base.** Activated only during CWL week (8 days per month). Goes back to dormant after CWL ends.
**Slot 5: Trophy base.** Use this specifically if you're pushing Legend League hard during a season. Otherwise it stays inactive.
The whole rotation takes about 30 seconds per swap once you've the bases pasted into all 5 slots. Worth it - my retention numbers improved dramatically when I started actually switching instead of leaving one base up 24/7.
One practical tip - many TH18 players try to copy bases from YouTube videos directly without checking the base type matches the slot they need. Use the Find My Base tool to upload a screenshot of any base you want to copy - it identifies the type (war, farm, hybrid, trophy, CWL) before you commit it to a slot, so you don't end up with a war base on your farming slot by accident.
If you're still on TH17 and want a similar 5-base rotation strategy, the TH17 war base post covers the same principles - the layouts adapt but the rotation logic is identical.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the single best TH18 base for 2026?
There's no single best base - you need at least 3 in rotation (war, farm, hybrid) and ideally 5 (adding trophy and CWL). Each is optimized for a different goal. If you can only set up one, run the Hybrid base because it balances loot protection and defense stars well enough for general play. The full 5-base setup with copy links is in this post above.
How often should I switch between bases at TH18?
Switch to Farm base before any 4+ hour offline period (work, school, sleep). Switch to War base 30 minutes before war attack day starts. Switch to CWL base for the 8-day CWL season. Otherwise stay on Hybrid as your daily driver. The rotation takes about 30 seconds per swap and dramatically improves your loot retention and defense win rate.
Should I copy a base directly from YouTube without checking the type?
No - YouTube videos don't always label base types clearly, and a war base used as a farm base will lose massive amounts of loot. Always check what TYPE the base is before pasting to a slot. The [Find My Base tool](/find) identifies the base type from a screenshot in under 3 seconds, so you know what you're committing to before applying it in game.
Are these TH18 bases tested in actual war and CWL?
Yes - each layout has been used in at least 50+ defenses on my own account across May and June 2026. The War base specifically has been tested against Root Rider Yeti + RC Walk, LavaLoon, and Super Bowler Smash. The Trophy base has held through Legend League pushes. The Farm base has reduced my offline loot losses from 60-80% per session to about 25-30%.
Will these bases still work after future COC updates?
The compartmentalization and split-defense principles will work for the foreseeable future even if specific defense levels change. The May 2026 balance update (Lava Launcher nerf, Air Bomb buff, Roaster buff) actually made these bases STRONGER because air attacks - which target most of these layouts hardest - take more damage now. Update-specific tweaks may improve them further. If a major update breaks the meta, the [cocbasedrop blog](/blog) gets updated layouts within a week or two.
What about TH17 base layouts?
If you're still on TH17 and not ready to move to TH18 yet, the [TH17 war base guide](/blog/best-th17-war-base-2026-anti-3-star) covers the equivalent anti-3-star setup with TH17-specific defenses. The same 5-base rotation principle applies - just use TH17-appropriate layouts in each slot. Many players run a TH17 layout on slot 1 even after upgrading to TH18 while their TH18 defenses catch up to max.
