Is 5v5 Clan War League Coming Back in 2026

Supercell added 5v5 Clan War League in February and removed it in April. Here's what the patch history actually says and how CWL works right now.

Quick answer

> Quick answer: 5v5 Clan War League is not in the game right now. Supercell added it in the February 23, 2026 update and removed it again in the April 2026 update. There's no official patch note scheduling a return.

So the format lasted about two months. If you signed up during that window and remember choosing a five player war, you're not misremembering. It existed, and then it didn't.

Today you choose between 15v15 and 30v30, and only if your clan sits in Master League I or below.

What the patch history actually says

I read the Clan War League update log rather than community chatter, because the two disagree constantly here. I checked the current matchmaking rules on the same page, since that's where most of the confusion starts.

The February 23, 2026 update added 5v5 wars to Clan War League. That's the whole entry. No trial period was announced, no end date was attached.

The April 2026 update removed it. The same update added four new leagues to Clan War League.

That pairing is worth noticing. Supercell did not simply delete a format and walk away. It deleted one and widened the league ladder in the same patch, which suggests the league structure was the thing being solved, not the war size.

Beyond that, the log says nothing. There's no official statement of why, and no announced plan to bring 5v5 back. Anyone who tells you a return date is guessing.

How CWL matchmaking really works

This is the part people get wrong most often, and it changes what you should do.

Your league is the only thing that decides who you'll face. After your clan's first placement, Town Hall levels and your players' offensive and defensive strength have no effect on matchmaking at all.

A stacked roster won't get you harder opponents. A weak one won't get you easier ones. Your league does the whole job.

That means the common complaint, that matchmaking judged your clan wrongly, is usually describing something else. You are matched with seven other clans in your league. If one of them is far stronger than you, it is because league placement is coarse, not because a strength calculation misfired.

The group forms once, at sign up, and it's fixed for the whole season. Sign up runs for two days. After that you play a round robin, one war against each clan in the group, seven wars across eight days.

Occasionally a group has six clans instead of eight, when the pool runs short. The season shortens to match, so everyone still faces everyone once.

What war sizes you can actually pick

Your roster needs at least 5 players and can hold up to 50, as long as they are eligible for war.

If your clan is in Master League I or below, or unranked, the leader picks the war size. With 5v5 gone, that choice is 15v15 or 30v30.

Champion League clans do not get a choice. They play 15v15.

There is one trap in the promotion rules worth knowing before you pick 30v30. A clan promoted out of Master League I while running a non standard war size has to play 15v15 the following season. So a 30v30 clan that climbs will find its next season looks nothing like the one it just won.

Plan the roster for that. A clan built entirely around fielding thirty warm bodies has a hard month ahead the moment it's promoted.

Our clan war league strategy guide covers building a roster that survives that transition.

What the four new leagues changed

The April update did two things at once. It took 5v5 out, and it added four leagues to the CWL ladder.

More tiers means clans spread across more rungs. That is the whole point of adding them. A ladder with few rungs forces very different clans into the same league, and then matchmaking has nothing finer to work with.

Remember that your league is the only matchmaking input after your first placement. So widening the ladder is not a cosmetic change. It is the direct lever on how fair your group feels.

If your seasons have felt better matched since April, that is the likely reason. If they have felt worse, you probably moved a tier and are now the smallest clan in a bigger room.

Either way, the fix available to you is the same. Win or lose your way to the tier where your roster belongs, and give it two or three seasons to settle before judging it.

Does war size change what the season pays

Yes, and this is the practical argument that usually settles the debate inside a clan.

At the end of the season your leader hands out bonus rewards. Both the number of bonuses and their size depend on two things. Your league, and the war size you played.

So a bigger war is not just more attacks. It changes what's in the pot.

That's the honest counterweight to the convenience argument for a small war size. A five player war is easy to fill and it pays a smaller clan reward, which is exactly the trade a leader has to weigh.

The leader also controls who receives the bonuses, and has three weeks to award them. Award them all at once, and once they're given they can't be moved.

Worth saying to your clan out loud before the season starts. Most bonus arguments happen because nobody explained the rule until after the medals landed.

Why a smaller war size appealed in the first place

It's worth being honest about the appeal, because it explains why the question keeps coming back.

A small clan cannot always field fifteen active war players. Ask any leader running a group of twenty casual members. Some seasons you are scraping to fill the roster, and a missed attack in CWL costs more than a missed attack in a regular war.

5v5 solved that. Five committed players and a clan could compete.

The cost is the other side of the same coin. Five slots means most of your clan sits out. In a format built to be the clan's big monthly event, that is a real loss, and it is the obvious argument against the size returning unchanged.

Neither view is wrong. They are just different clans wanting different things from the same feature.

What to do about it this season

Nothing about your current season changes because of any of this, so don't wait on it. Play the size you have.

If your clan struggles to fill fifteen, the practical fix available today is recruitment, not a format change. Sign up with the roster you can genuinely field, and remember the roster minimum is five players even though the war size is not.

If you are choosing between 15v15 and 30v30, pick the one where every player in the roster gets attacks. Bench time is what kills clan activity, and it does that whatever the war size.

Our Town Hall 18 attack strategy guide covers the attacks that hold up best in CWL, which matters more this month than a format that is not in the game.

And if 5v5 does come back, you will read it in a patch note. That is the only place this gets settled.

One more thing worth planning around, because it decides what the whole month was for. League Medals arrive as a single lump when the season closes, not war by war. How many you get depends on your league, where your clan finishes, and how you personally performed across the war days.

So a clan that climbs a tier suddenly earns noticeably more than it did last month. That's good news with a catch. Medals have a storage cap, and anything past it converts into gems at a poor rate.

Check your medal balance in the last day or two before the season ends, not after. Our CWL medals spending guide covers the cap and what the League Shop is actually worth buying. Set the expectation early and the last day of the season stops being an argument.

That's the whole practical answer while the format question stays open. Play the size that keeps your roster busy, climb to the tier that fits, and spend the medals before the cap eats them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 5v5 Clan War League still in Clash of Clans?

No. Supercell added 5v5 wars to Clan War League in the February 23, 2026 update and removed the format in the April 2026 update. The same April update added four new leagues to CWL.

What war sizes can I choose in Clan War League now?

15v15 or 30v30, and only if your clan is in Master League I or below, or unranked. Champion League clans play 15v15 with no choice.

How does Clan War League matchmaking decide my opponents?

After your clan's first placement, your league is the sole factor. Town Hall levels and your players' offensive and defensive strength have no effect on who you face.

How many wars are there in a CWL season?

Seven, one against each of the other clans in your group of eight, played across eight days. If a group forms with six clans instead, the season shortens so every clan still meets every other clan once.

How many players do I need to sign up for CWL?

At least five, and you can put up to fifty in the roster. Only the players in the roster can fight. Our Town Hall 18 war base guide covers the defensive side of a CWL season.
